The question that clients frequently ask a therapist who specializes in eating disorders is “what qualifies you to do this work?” For me, the answer is both personal and professional.
When clients share their fear, anxiety, shame, embarrassment or obsession with food, weight & dieting, I totally understand. I know the pain, suffering and despair that are often a part of an eating disorder.
So when people ask, “Is recovery possible?” My response is, “Absolutely!” It takes time and patience; there is not one path to recovery. Everyone’s journey is a little bit different, but recovery is possible. It is hard work, but the rewards of being freed from the obsession with food, weight, dieting or exercise is life altering.
I have devoted the past 30 years of my career to helping individuals and families break free from the grip of eating disorders. I have seen and experienced the freedom that takes place as the obsession with food, dieting, calories & weight gradually begins to decrease, and that time and energy is redirected to other areas of life that are much more rewarding and satisfying.
